A former model, actress, radio personality, freelance correspondent, red carpet diva, hostess among other endeavors, Tee Spence has acquired experience in the industry from across many spectrums of art. "Yes, I am a Real Person Too! I have had more than my share of adversity and trauma in my life. I have also had some very rich and meaningful experiences which I recall with pride and many smiles.
Much of my adult life has been centered around the world of celebrities, entertainers, individuals who were goal-driven and many who have encouraged me and helped me along the way.
I was born to a very poor family in Michigan. My birth mother was caucasian, and I happened to be the product of an interracial relationship that she had with a african american man. My birth family never really accepted me, and I was in foster care in Michigan until I was four years old. At the age of four I was adopted by a african american family living in the Lansing, Michigan area, and I did not really know much if anything about my birth parents until after I graduated from high school at the age of 18.
I grew up in Okemos, Michigan, in a family setting that was often chaotic and difficult. Some of the experiences I endured during that time - both within the family and community where I lived have impacted me and created traumas until this very day. Many of my activities and conversations on my blogs, podcasts, and radio interviews are colored by those experiences which I share with the interviewee, who have had similar problems and experiences.
A major turning point in my life that made me grow up and look at life in a totally different way was being sexually assaulted, as a child by my oldest adopted brother. This occurred while I was a young girl until I reached my teenage years, this effect's me to this day and age. I find it to be trying and overwhelming on different occasions that brings about triggers of those memories in my everyday life. It's shameful to me that my younger brother also knew what was happening to me and was present on occasions while it was going on. He chose his brother over me and participated at times while never standing up for me or telling my parents what I was going through so they would take action and make it stop. So I stayed quiet an suffered in silence. They told me if this was ever known I'd go back to the group home, which I so frightened about happening. To this day I've never received an apology or has anyone taken accountability for the part they played in robbing me of my childhood. I found out with therapy and a good support system helped me with these battles many of us endure in this journey called life. It will help many of those who listen to these conversations that are aired with the ability to relate to the same type of experiences and problems that I faced as a child and a young adult. This includes some of the challenges of trying to "make it" in the entertainment environment industry that is often hostile to females and people of color.
Although I am a biracial person, I have always identified myself as being black. I grew up in the Greater Lansing area. This created an atmosphere that was hard to fit in and not knowing what avenues to take an be accepted and have a future because the area that I lived in was predominantly white.
My adoptive family divorced when I was 12. I chose to live with my father, and with his help of surrogate "mothers" I survived and made it through to graduate from Haslett High School in Haslett, MI. I knew that there was more to life than what I was experiencing, so I fought hard to get through school and graduate. I worked for Secretary Of The Senate and the Lansing Area AIDS Network in Lansing as their secretary for a long time while I attended Lansing Community College. I knew at that time that my goal was to be someone, that was involved in a field that would let me help people with the same set of challenges along with children who had experienced some of the same rejection and abuse. During that time I found out the identity of my birth mother and was heartbroken to find out she had contracted the HIV virus and was very ill. I then took it upon myself to take care of her the best that I could. She also introduced me to one of my birth sisters that still lived in Michigan and we instantaneously bonded. She always has my best interest at heart and is my has truly my best friend more than I could of asked for in a sister.
My hard work paid off, and I was able to get a scholarship to go to Atlanta and attend a HBCU College named Morris Brown.
Once that door opened to a new world, I never looked back. Living in Atlanta and working at a music studio called "Patchwerk" opened my eyes to the entertainment industry. I loved music and also the hip hop environment soothed my soul! I was inspired being around so many nationally known successful entertainers which shaped my future career and efforts greatly, It also helped me land a job with So So Def artist "The Brat" as her administrative assistant for 8 years.
Working with "Da Brat" gave me the opportunity to travel the world and experience a whole different and glamorous life with nationally known successful entertainers. I craved for more! It also allowed me the freedom to fly back and forth from Atlanta to Michigan to checkup on my biological mother in her final days. She passed when I was on my flight back to Atlanta, I had just come from visiting her. It was very hard on my mind, body and soul. However Da Brat helped me through one of my toughest times in my life. To take time to grieve and I will always be thankful to her for allowing me to spend time and comfort the woman that brought me into this world,. She was taken from me much to soon. I loved her more than all the stars in the sky.
I then ended up leaving Atlanta to go to Hollywood where I took the next step and went on to pursue my career.
I acquired experience in the industry from across many spectrums of art as a former model, actress, radio personality, freelance correspondent, hostess, and in other related endeavors. I spent many hours "on the red carpet" at major events with major stars and celebrities. The memories of that time are "bittersweet," and I sometimes share my experiences, successes, and failures with people who I interact with in radio interviews on the internet and on my podcasts.
My past experience as a radio personality gives me full confidence in my abilities to communicate properly and efficiently with guests. Those experiences bolster my often bubbly personality, and I continue to work hard to refine my skills in communication and radio settings. Hoping this will usher in a new era of purpose that to help others and to gain prosperity.
'Tee Spence' undertakes the objective of meeting with a wide variety of celebrity guests in order to find out their secrets of longevity within the industry. These guests have a variety of a background from singers, songwriters, rappers, comedy, film, sports, tv, authors and some people not in the limelight but still have a story to tell. I sit and chat and ask those questions and make those comments which I believe will be of interest to those in my audiences.
I look forward to sharing the knowledge I have picked up throughout my career with my guests and my followers/listeners in hopes of creating a greater collective of thought, rather than a simple set of experiences.
